Gensler and Corgan are both well versed in delivering high-profile design-build architecture projects. So when their proposal, with Turner/PCL, was selected by Los Angeles World Airports to design and build the new Midfield Satellite Concourse at LAX, they knew their teams would need to integrate more than ever before. The joint-venture project is a 1.2 million square foot expansion that includes a new concourse, passenger tunnel, and gateway building.
Because design of the project was shared between the two architectural firms, they needed to be able to communicate efficiently and share complex Revit models across multiple teams in different offices. They used cloud collaboration tools to provide a central project repository where they could share and review their Revit models, no matter where their team members were located.
“We never shy away from using new technologies. It’s about how well we integrate with all the other players and how well we communicate with them; that’s inevitably the success of any project.” Steven Knudsen, Associate, Gensler.
This ease of virtual collaboration allowed the firms to fully integrate as one partner, rather than splitting the work up, or handing things off back and forth.
“Many times when multiple architectural firms associate, they look at how they will break work apart. In this case, we decided to co-mingle the team, all the way from the top management down to how we actually produce the document, we had members of each firm working side by side.” Brent Kelley, Aviation Principal, Corgan.
Beyond co-location and integrated teams, the cloud also allowed the firms to save money and deliver designs more efficiently.

The project team used both BIM 360 Team and Collaboration for Revit to enable Gensler and Corgan to work in real-time as one design team. All team members, including non-Revit users, could use BIM 360 Team to move through the models three dimensionally to better understand them.
